About

Counterpoint Architecture started in Townsville in 2017, but the story begins well before that.

Counterpoint was born when two like-minded practices, Outcrop Architecture and 9point9 Architects, decided to come together. Both studios had strong histories across the region and years of experience behind them. The merge wasn’t about getting bigger for the sake of it. It was about aligning values, strengthening ideas, and building a studio that could make a real contribution to the places we care about.

Today, the practice is led by co-directors Zammi Rohan and Mark Kennedy.

We’ve both lived and worked in the North for many years, and that local understanding continues to shape how we approach every project.

From the beginning, we set out to be approachable, practical and easy to work with. Good architecture, in our view, comes from strong relationships and clear conversations. Whether we’re designing a family home, a school or a public building, we stay closely involved from the first discussion right through to delivery. We care about the detail, but we also care about how people feel working with us along the way.

We believe architecture should do more than solve problems. At its best, it connects people to place and contributes to something bigger than any single project.

At Counterpoint, we’re in it for the long haul. We’re here to create spaces that make a lasting difference and help shape a strong future for Queensland, particularly in regional communities.

In 2022, we opened a second studio in Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast. It was a natural extension of the practice, allowing us to bring the same hands-on, locally grounded approach to projects further south, while staying true to where we started and what we stand for.
